The people of Morocco woke up to the heavy loss of an earthquake in the early morning hours of September 9, 2023. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake, centered in the El-Huz region of Marrakech, was felt in Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Agadir and Fes.
According to public information, the earthquake has caused heavy casualties. As of September 11, the lifeless bodies of more than 2600 people have been pulled out from under the rubble, while around 2500 injured people have been rescued. However, it is said that there are still thousands of people under the rubble. Many villages in rural areas have still not been reached and the number of injured and dead is expected to rise every day. Due to the earthquake, thousands of people are have no access to shelter, nutrition and health facilities. Especially the shortage of drinking water, which is a basic need, is increasing every day.
An earthquake may not be preventable, but it can be avoided by taking precautions. In Morocco, unplanned urbanization and the lack of earthquake-proof structures, especially in villages and provincial cities, is the cause of the losses. The kingdom of Morocco is primarily responsible for the losses because it did not take these measures and allowed unplanned urbanization.
Let’s Heal the Wounds of the Moroccan People Together!
As ATİK, we wish the people of Morocco a speedy recovery, condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the wounded. We must bandage their wounds together against the disasters and sufferings of the people wherever they are. Che Guevara’s saying “Solidarity is the kindness of the oppressed” has always been an important call for all oppressed peoples. As ATIK, we are launching a financial support campaign to heal the wounds of the Moroccan people together. The campaign to be collected will be delivered directly to the people through the Moroccan organizations that are members of the “Anti Imperialist Anti Fascist United Front” that we have formed together. We call on all local and migrant workers and laborers to participate in the financial solidarity campaign to heal the wounds of the Moroccan people.
The campaign will run until September 20, 2023. You can support by sending your donation to the account number below by writing “Morocco Earthquake“.
